A poetic journey through my mind

For Rowan, on her Fourth birthday

“…and though she be but little, she is fierce.”  William Shakespeare, “Midsummer Nights Dream”

little wonder, precious child,

tiny princess, sweet and wild,

silly angel, rainbow pearl,

oldest sister, great big girl,

all these are the things you are,

but not all that you will, by far,

for as you grow and reach so high,

one day you will reach the sky,

and spread your branches over all,

my Rowan tree, so strong and tall.

I love you, baby-girl…Image

Coyote Tanka

Tanka are a form of Japanese poetry, like the better known Haiku.  I’ve noticed that there are a few definitions for the syllable count in a tanka…the form I’ve chosen is 7, 5, 7, 5, 7, 7.  Hope you like the juxtaposition of a purely Western mythological figure and an Eastern art form!

coyote in the desert
ske’lep, or murphy,
whiskey jack, barking dog,
what shall I call you?

may I name you Trickster
and haunt the mountains with you?

I see your whiskered face, lost,
coyote in the city,
glass bottle of forgetting,
in crumpled paper bag

riding empty subway car
dreaming of desert sky home

coyote in the mountains
glow of firelight
you stare into the campfire
voice of gravel and stone

“Hey there, got a cigarette?”
your shadow has ears and braids

coyote takes a train ride
leathered paw grips tight
eyes under hat watch miles pass
through open steel door

places flash before your eyes
which one will you choose today?

coyote and the maiden
lovely by the fire
dancing to confuse her mind
bring her to your tent

night black hair like wings falling
raven laughs and flies away

Fox Dreams

mischievous fox that I love
come to me this night
whisper your dreams into me
let me run with you

Kitsune in the mist, your eyes
twinkle in time with my heart

Inari my hearts first love
beautiful goddess
white tail wrapped around pointed nose
concealing your smile

under the cherry blossoms
I wonder what you think of?

usagi I, the timid
caught in kitsune stare
in the blossoms, heart beating
shall I run or stay?

dewdrop falls on kitsune nose
upon the sneeze I am gone

mischievous spirit of fox
tell me what you see
only the leaf dappled woods
or a place to play?

dance in the woods, little fox
my heart will remember you

tanuki in the fireplace
run and hide, spirit!
belly fat with stolen stew
can not outrun me

kitsune I, the fox spirit
and I will have thy dinner!
